Not farmers, but citizens are the biggest polluters of the surface water. This appears from research by Tobias Licher, professor of Hydrogeochemistry at the Ruhruniversity in German Bochum. According to Licher it is especially residues of human medicines and residues of housefront paint that cause pollution. For instance, from housefront paint active ingredients against algae and fungal growth ended up in the surface water that have been prohibited as active substances in agriculture since the nineties.
