USApple expects 6% less apples than last year

USApple, the national trade association for the U.S. apple industry, estimates the 2026 U.S. apple crop at around 5.0 million tonnes. This is 6% lower than last year and 3% below the five-year average.

Two-thirds of the apples produced in the United States come from the state of Washington. New York accounts for 12% and Michigan for 9.5%. The remaining 12% comes from smaller producing states such as Pennsylvania, California, Oregon and Virginia.

Gala is the most widely grown variety, accounting for 16% of production, followed by Red Delicious (12%), Granny Smith (11%) and Honeycrisp (10%).

Over the past five years, production of Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Cosmic Crisp® and Pink Lady/Cripps Pink® has increased, while production of Gala, Red Delicious and Fuji has declined.
