EU lifts import duties on certain fertilisers
25-5-2026
On Friday 22 May, the EU Member States decided to suspend import duties on certain fertilisers. This concerns nitrogen-based fertilisers used in European agriculture and raw materials for the production of those fertilisers, such as ammonia and urea. The suspension does not apply to products from Russia and Belarus.
The measure is expected to save farmers and growers nearly 60 million euros in import duties. Fertiliser prices have risen sharply since 2021, which has also indirectly led to rising food prices.
The war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have driven prices up even further. Nitrogen-based fertilisers currently cost around 500 euros per tonne. Last winter, the price was 380 euros. (Source: Vilt.be)
