EU apple and pear crop revised upwards
11-11-2025
European fruit growers harvested 5% more apples and slightly more pears than initially forecast at the Prognosfruit Congress in August 2025.
This week, the World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) released its first update on the 2025/2026 European apple and pear crop. According to the new figures, almost 11 million tonnes of apples and just over 1.8 million tonnes of pears were picked. Back in August, the EU apple crop had been estimated at 10.455 million tonnes and the pear crop at 1.787 million tonnes.
The upward revision is mainly attributed to favourable late-summer weather, which improved fruit size and colouration for mid- and late-season varieties.
The most notable increases were reported in Poland (+400,000 tonnes), Germany (+60,000 to 80,000 tonnes), Belgium (+20,000 tonnes), the Netherlands (+10,000 tonnes), and France (+20,000 tonnes). Several Prognosfruit contributors—including Italy, Austria, and the aforementioned countries—are still updating their final figures as harvesting of some varieties continues through November.
For pears, production has increased mainly in Belgium (+25,000 tonnes), the Netherlands (+10,000 tonnes), and France (+10,000 tonnes), partially offset by a slight further decline in Italy (-9,000 tonnes).
Although production is somewhat higher than initially expected, total volumes remain well below the region’s full potential of 13 million tonnes of apples and more than 2 million tonnes of pears—confirming a “medium to low” average crop for the European 2025/2026 pipfruit season.
