Dutch apple and pear production higher than estimated

Dutch fruit growers have harvested 10 million kilograms more apples and 10 million kilograms more pears than expected before the harvest. The reason: a better fruit size than anticipated.

Once the harvest is complete and countries have a good picture of the actual harvest volume, the harvest estimates presented in August will be adjusted. The Netherlands was one of the first countries to compile the final harvest figures for apples and pears. Due to larger than expected fruit size, 10 million kilograms more apples and pears were harvested than expected before the harvest. The fruit grew considerably, particularly in September.

A total of 236 million kilograms of apples were picked in the Netherlands. The estimate before the harvest was 226 million kilograms. More pears (358 million kilograms) were also picked than estimated in August (348 million kilograms). The apple harvest was ultimately 22 per cent larger than last year, and growers picked 11 per cent more pears than in 2024. This means that the pear harvest is the same size as in 2023.
