Debate over size of Polish apple crop

There is debate in Poland over the actual size of the apple crop. The Polish statistical office GUS expects a crop of around 3.1 million tonnes, while the fruit growers’ organisation Towarzystwo Rozwoju Sadów Karłowych (TRSK) estimates production at less than 2.7 million tonnes. The European apple crop forecast puts production at 2.665 million tonnes. A difference of more than 400,000 tonnes is considerable for the European apple market. According to Mirosław Maliszewski, fruit grower, politician and chairman of ZSRP, the Polish fruit growers’ association, this was also evident last year, when an inaccurate crop forecast influenced growers’ commercial decisions and the market situation. According to industry representative Dominik Woźniak, Polish production is difficult to estimate accurately because only around 15% of growers are organised. In addition, differences between orchards are exceptionally large as a result of spring frost; some farms are expected to harvest only 10–20% of a normal crop. (Source: www.e-sadownictwo.pl)
