During the past couple of decades, Chinese apple production has grown to between 45 and 50 million tonnes per year. In principle, this volume is enough to cover domestic consumption. Nevertheless, the import of apples has increased considerably during the past couple of years. In China, too, consumer preferences are changing. A part of the population prefers flavoursome brand apples to Fuji grown in China and other traditional, often sweet varieties.
