European winegrowers are facing hard times. Demand is falling, export markets are more unstable and climate change is causing increasing uncertainty. The EU wants to give their sector an impulse.
The EU proposes a package of measures to help wine producers to attune their production to a changing market and to stand up to climate change. For instance, member states are allowed to intervene with measures, such as grubbing surplus grapevines or prematurely removing unripe grapes.
The plan also includes more attention for alcohol-free and low-alcohol wines. These must become more attractive, both to produce and to consume. Finally, the EU wants to strengthen wine tourism. Producer groups managing wines with a protected geographical indication can get support to extend tourist initiatives.
The proposal has to be submitted to the European Parliament and the Council. If an agreement is reached, the proposals can become part of EU legislation. (Source: Vilt.be)
