Increasingly scab resistant club varieties planted

During the past couple of years, the quality characteristics of apple varieties with low susceptibility to scab have reached the level of the best varieties susceptible to scab. Varieties with a resistance to the scab fungus, are no longer only considered for organic growing, but have – as a concept variety – made their entrance at farms with integrated production (IP). Meanwhile, more than ten relatively new scab resistant varieties have already been planted in various European countries. As to this, France is in the lead. Here, considerable surface areas of the (scab resistant) varieties Coop 43/Juliet® (460 ha), lnored/Story® (420 ha) and Xeleven/Swing® (> 110 ha) have already been planted. In Italy, mainly lnored/Story® (in Piemonte and Emilia Romagna) and lpador/Giga®, CIVM49/RedPop® and UEB406-1/Bonita® (in South Tyrol) are in the picture. Further north in Europe, these include SQ159/Natyra®/Magic Star® and more recently Wurtwinning/Bloss®. A total of more than 250 ha of UEB 32642/Opal® has been planted in several European countries.
