Dutch trading company Staay Food Group has taken over one of the biggest Dutch pear growing farms, Westende Fruitteelt in Fijnaart. Westende Fruitteelt grows pears on 135 ha. In addition to Conference the farm grows, among other fruits, the concept varieties Rode Doyenné van Doorn/Sweet Sensation®, Uta/Dazzling Gold® and Red Conference.
Westende has about 25 people in permanent employment. Round about harvest time there are about 400 seasonal workers.
Staay Food Group wants to shorten the chain by linking up with more fruit farms. The focus here is on pip fruit, stone fruit, melon, pineapple and greenhouse and leaf vegetables. Staay Food Group already has its own fruit farms in the Netherlands, Spain, Brazil and Costa Rica. In 2022, the group had a turnover of 346.8 million euros.
