Spring frost seriously affects especially Poland

In the period between 15 and 25 of April, temperatures in many regions in Europe fell below freezing. The frost occurred precisely at the moment trees are most susceptible to spring frost. Due to early flowering, the trees were in full bloom or there were already small fruits on the trees.

Although at the moment of writing, early May, the ultimate damage cannot as yet be assessed, it is quite clear, that locally many flowers and fruitlets are frozen. The most worrying reports come from Poland. Especially in the growing regions in the south, such as Sandomierz and Lublin there is much damage, due to several consecutive nights of frost with temperatures down to ‑4 °C. It is true that in the most important growing areas in Poland, around Warsaw, temperatures fell to below zero during a smaller number of nights, but here too, nights were measured with temperatures with ‑5 °C just above the ground. This caused a lot of damage in both strawberry and apple.
Other East European countries too, such as Serbia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, report (sometimes heavy damage) due to spring frost.
