Slightly less wine in 2022

The global production of wine will turn out to be a bit smaller than in previous years.

The international Organisation for Viniculture and Winemaking (OVI) estimates production this year at 260 million hectolitres. This is a fraction less than the 262 million hectolitres of 2021. The OIV has based its estimate on information from 29 countries that together represent 91% of the global production.
In spite of the heat and drought of 2022, the European wine crop has been better than expected. Thanks to the small amount of precipitation, infestation by fungi was less than normal. In Spain and Greece, the drought did have an impact, though. In Spain wine production is 12% smaller and in Greece even 29%. (Source: Vilt.be/Belga)
