Cost price calculations show that the cost price of one kilo of apples or pears in Northwest Europe is moving in the direction of one euro per kilo. At the moment, the cost price is already near 90 cents per kilo due to higher labour costs, energy costs and price rises of practically all means of production. This concerns the costs of cultivation, storage, grading and packing. As matters appear right now, production costs will rise further.
Fruit growers no longer have many possibilities to lower the cost price. Raising production per hectare is an option, but can by no means compensate for all cost increases.
The price of the end product will have to go up, but how? (Part) of the answer can be read about in the EFM October edition.
