In the Netherlands and Belgium, the surface area growing pears (over 90% Conference), has increased substantially. As a result of the extension of the cultivation surface area, pear production during the next few years will grow to over 800,000 tonnes.
Total European pear production this year is 2,078,000 tonnes. According to information provided by market analyst Helwig Schwartau of the AMI during the Interpera congress, held in June, at a future production level of 2,450,000 tonnes, production will be bigger than consumption. (source: EFM)
